Disney Cruise Ports of Call

While the Disney cruise ships themselves are a fabulous vacation destination, they are also a floating ‘Fantasyland’, traveling to beautiful and exotic ports of call. If you can manage to tear yourself away from the activities and amenities of the Disney cruise ships for a few hours, many wonderful adventures await you when the ship docks.

The Disney Wonder departs each Sunday from Port Canaveral for a 4 night cruise, and again each Thursday for a 3 night cruise. Both itineraries include stops at Nassau, Bahamas and Castaway Cay, Disney’s own private island paradise. The 4 night cruise also includes either one day at sea, or an additional stop at Freeport, Bahamas.

The Disney Magic departs from Port Canaveral each Saturday for a 7 night cruise, and it alternates between cruising the eastern Caribbean and the western Caribbean. The Eastern Caribbean cruise includes stops at St. Thomas/St. John, St. Maarten and Castaway Cay, while the Western Caribbean itinerary includes stops at Key West. Cozumel, Grand Caymen and Castaway Cay.

This summer of 2007. The Disney Magic has departed from its usual journey around the Caribbean, and instead has traveled across the Atlantic to cruise the Mediterranean for the summer months. It is departing from Barcelona, Spain for 10 and 11 night cruises to beautiful cities on the Mediterranean, with stops in Italy, France, Spain and Sicily. Next summer, the Disney Magic will travel through the Panama Canal to spend the summer on the Mexican Riviera, with stops at Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallerta and Mazatlan.

Beware that the passport rules for American travelers have changed, and may or may not affect your travel plans. As of today, passports are required for all travel across borders by air – including Mexico, the Bahamas and the Caribbean, but not for travelers who arrive by cruise ship. They are planning to make passports required for cruise ship travelers soon – perhaps as early as January, so be sure to keep posted as to the rules. Even when passports are not required, having one certainly makes disembarking much quicker, and the wait for passports is extremely long due to the changing rules, so if you need a passport, be sure to apply sooner rather than later.

For example, the first and second person pay £1,000 each and the 3rd person pays pound 500. But on the other hand, a single would pay &pound1,500. Another thing to look out for is the higher the deck the stateroom is on, the higher the price.

Cruise holidays do not have be be costly, particularly if you take advantage of cruise ships that are moving from general holiday cruise destinations to another. You will most probably find a bargain here or a discount on last minute cruise.

I've been looking at the reviews for both cruise lines and it seems that Carnival has more bad reviews then Royal Caribbean, but in your opinion which cruise line has better than the other FOOD, ON BOARD ACTIVITIES, YOUTH PROGRAMS, CLEANNESS, ROOMS, FRIENDLY STAFF. When I was 12 years old, I had surgery with complications. I was told there was a chance I would not be able to have children. Growing up I could not imagine my life without children and worried about it often. When I got married close to my 21st birthday, my husband and I hoped that we would be lucky enough to have children. Luckily, I found out I was pregnant almost a year later. However, soon after the great news, I got very sick. I was working full time at a corporate travel agency and I could not work. My doctor told me that I had to take care of myself or I would be at risk to lose my baby. My employer got very nasty with me and was not compassionate about my sickness. I almost lost my job, but my doctor was able to get me medical leave from the family leave act. The experience was horrible. I vowed to never have to choose between my career and the health of my baby. I began to look for ways to work from home. I tried Mary Kay Cosmetics but I was terrible at it. It didn’t feel comfortable and I really had nothing to make me want to be successful.

When my son Dillon was born in February 1997, it was one of the best days of my life. I quit my job and tried to stay home full time. I was able to stay home until Dillon was three months old. Then I went back part time at a travel agency. I hated leaving him even for the few hours I had to. So I decided to start my own travel agency from my home. I knew the travel business well enough to be on my own, but I did not know very much about being a home business owner. For the next two years, I had to learn so much about running a home business. I got help from other work at home moms. I met them online and it was so helpful.

I created a website and began actively advertising for business. I read anything I could on having a home business. I learned as much as I could about the internet. I began brainstorming on how I could expand my business. I decided to specialize in family vacations since I had a growing family. My second child, Travis was born January 1999. I began to learn how to balance having a family and a business. I worked whenever I could. Many nights I work late at night when my children are sleeping. My husband is very supportive.

I finally started becoming successful and was gaining more customers each day. I started taking on independent agents and helping them start their own agencies. I let them work with my agency because I had already paid what it took to start the agency. I trained them and began building my business by helping others get into the industry. I took a small percentage of their commissions for running the agency. It slowly turned into a full fledge training program with a handbook and a website dedicated to my agents. I also created a website for people who wanted to join the agency. I marketed to find those who would be interested. The agency has continued to grow as the word has spread. What I offer people interested in the travel industry is unique since I accept those without prior experience and train them for free.

I have been interviewed by several magazines and featured in books on home businesses. Currently I have over 200 independent agents working with my agency. Our sales have skyrocketed. In 2002, we did $20,000 in sales for Royal Caribbean Cruise Line. In 2003, we did $147,000 in sales. We are growing in so many ways. I am still very active in the agency. I still answer my emails myself and strive to personally know all my agents. I do not have anyone helping me at my home office. I do have my very first agent as well as many who have been with me for years helping out. I handle all the bookkeeping, shipping, daily business issues, advertising, website maintenance, and many other of the important operations needed to run this business. It has become a part of me.

My goal is to have 300 agents by the time I am 30. I hope to be able to get some help handling day-to-day operations. I would also like to continue to grow to become more recognized in the travel industry. I want to help as many people as I can who want to start their own home based travel agency. I want to continue building my business and each year find something new that I can do to be more successful at this business.

I wrote my own ebook on starting a home travel agency. This offered information to those interested and helped spread the word about my agency’s program. Each year we grow more and more. I have written two other ebooks since my first one. One is on juggling a home business and family. The other is on marketing a home business on a small amount of funds. I am just now beginning to have more money available for advertising. What I have done to date has been still on a limited budget. I am just now beginning to spend more money on advertising.

My family has been very supportive. My boys are now 5 and 7 years old and they try to help me out as much as possible. We go on family vacations and I can use it to help my business. I have been able to save on childcare from not having to work outside the home. I was able to be with my children as they have been growing up. I didn’t miss their first words or steps. I also have been teaching them that anything is possible. I want them to know that if they have the drive to do something, they can do it. Every day that I got discouraged, I would think of the fact that if I did not succeed, I would have to go back to work full time and put my children into daycare.

My 5 year old was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes last May. This was a hard adjustment for our family. He needed me more than ever. I was able to be there and everyone involved in my agency understood. I was able to take the time I needed to stay with him in the hospital and learn how to handle his diabetes. My agents pulled together and helped me out. I can’t imagine how things would have been if I had a full time job outside the home. I was able to take care of my child without worry.

I feel very fortunate. I had a dream and I was able to make it come true. I also have something I can call my own. I love being a mom. I also love being an entrepreneur. It is very satisfying looking at what I have accomplished in 6 years. I know the possibilities are endless. I know as long as I continue to work hard and be creative in growing my business, I will continue to be successful. I am now able to help others who want to start a home business. I wrote three e-books and I get to write articles to help others. 6 years ago I would have never imagined this would be my life. It just proves that anything is possible if you really want it bad enough.

MIAMI – The Coast Guard has located a cruise ship crew member who reportedly jumped overboard near Miami.

Thirty-one-year-old Robert Mado was found treading water off Cutler Bay about two hours after the Royal Caribbean’s Majesty of the Seas issued a distress call Friday morning. Mado was an assistant purser on the ship.

Royal Caribbean says four witnesses reported watching Mado jump overboard. Officials said he was recovering and in good condition.

Mado was found about five miles off the Fowey Rocks near Biscayne Bay. The ship was en route to Miami from Key West.

Living in a frozen wonderland gets tired in the months of February and March. So, we plan a winter “getaway” every year. It also gives me an excellent opportunity to test sunscreens that I’ll recommend to my patients this year.

“Where do you want to go this year, dear,” I asked my wife. “I don’t know. What about you?” she replied “Disney World,” I said, not waiting a second. “We’ve been there. Let’s go on a cruise,” she retorted “O.K. Let’s do a Disney cruise,” I replied “Are you sure? There’s lots of kids on that boat.” “No, a Disney cruise is for everyone.” “O.K. Just get me away from the cold.” Then I asked my 17 year old daughter, “What do you think about a Disney Cruise?” She said, “Any cruise is good. Can I bring a friend?” “OF course” So it was set. I phoned the Disney help desk, booked two balcony suites for a western Caribbean cruise about the Disney Wonder’ one for my wife and I, and one for our 17 year old daughter and her friend, Christine.

Getting There

Disney cruises leave from Cape Canaveral – 50 minutes from Orlando. Conveniently, Disney arranges bus transportation from the airport to the cruise ship. So they have most things well in hand.

The Embarkment Procedure

When we arrived at the embarkment center, we were issued into a line. The line moved quickly – ten minutes tops. They checked our identification papers, then sent us to the line to get our “key to the world cards.” Then we were off to the ship. The girls went on to explore. My wife and I waited for the luggage to arrive, which didn’t take long, and when it did, we unpacked. This is one of the best features of cruising – you only unpack once, regardless of the number of destinations you go to.

The Ship

The ship that does the longer cruises is the Disney Magic.It’s sister ship, the Disney Wonder does the shorter 3 and 4 day cruises.

The moment you cross the gangway, you are welcomed and over the public address system. Each is equipped to provide its 2700 passengers with a full range of services – from bingo to classic Disney Broadway style shows.

And all of the service is provided by thousands of cast members from dozens of countries around the world. For example, our dinner server, Jacob was from the Czech republic and Assistant waiter was Esther from Hungary. Disney makes a point to everyone – its 877 rooms have 25% more space than the industry average.

And the ship is designed to lure adults, teenagers, children and young adults to their areas and activities. My teenage daughter and her friend loved the area reserved for teenagers. It’s called the stack and provided a great area for them to hang out in.

But other activities include a Wide World of Sports Deck (deck 10), a 10,700 foot spa, a children’s club, dining and dancing areas, a movie theatre and a grand stage. But don’t bother to look for a casino – you won’t find one on a Disney ship.

You can never be bored – I dare you.

But there are more activities – for each and every age group

Bars and Lounges

From stylish spots with live piano requests to bars where you can watch your favorite sports event, Disney has a number of options for you.

Events-

Character Breakfast

A not to be missed special event, where you can meet the characters up close. Always held in Parrots Cay, Be sure to bring your camera. Although other options exist to get photos with Mickey, Donald, Goofy and Minny, this is often your best opportunity. Warning – the noise level is high, the atmosphere exuberant. Captains Gala Dress up in your finery to enjoy this event. It’s a great night to get a photo with the Captain, or the first mate.

Pirates In The Caribbean Party

Disney throws a great party and this is no exception. At dinner, everyone wears pirate garb. If you don’t have any- don’t fret – a bandanna will be provided. And after dinner, the part begins. The pool is overlade with a dance floor – and after the dance there are fireworks – Disney is the only ship with fireworks at sea!

Key West

The sailing and snorkeling is what the Caribbean is about. Old Town Trolley or Conch Train Tour A solid 60 minutes takes you through high points. Best used as a guide to see things in more depth later. Butterfly Conservatory A great place to discover the Secret life of butterfly’s Pirate Soul Museum The true story of the pirates of the Caribbean Key West Shipwreck museum While we were there, the treasure of a 15th century Spanish galleon was there.

Castaway Cay

If you’ve ever dreamed of a perfect, private tropical island, Disney has recreated it here. Disney has secured the rights to the soul use of this tiny island which measures 3 miles long by two miles wide and all but 10 percent are left intentionally undeveloped. But of course, Disney has lots of things for those who want to be active – biking, beaching, snorkeling, parasailing and simply loafing in a hammock. There are secluded beaches for adults, teens and families. The day we were there was supposed to be cool, but we went anyway and it turned out to be a perfect day – a little too hot because our daughter developed a bad sunburn. She knew better – she’s been in the tropics before. My wife and I treated ourselves to a couple’s massage in a private cabana, a nice touch for our last day

Grand Cayman Island

In 1503, Columbus was blown to these islands by a storm. Then, he was greeted by 1,000’s of turtles. Subsequently, it became a British isle and still remains a protectorate of Britain. The most amazing feature is its great Coral Reef. In fact, it is one of the top dive sites in the world. And if you shop there – stay away from items made of black Coral or turtle – they are both endangered species. The highlight of our trip there was a visit to “Stingray City” where you can frolic with these amazing creatures. Tame as a house pet, you get to feed them squid, ride them and pet them

Cozumel

The largest island in Mexico, it rates high for scuba diving ever since Jacques Cousteau discovered the reef in the 1960’s. Another treat is this is one of the few places you can frolic with Dolphins. And you can go mainland to see Tulum, a truly amazing Mayan site,. Who goes Cruising With Disney Families of course but others also love it. In short, this cruise is for Disney followers – those who love everything Disney.

State Department holds ‘Passport Day’ Saturday – Yahoo! News

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of State is holding a national outreach event, “Passport Day in the USA,” on Saturday.

The event is being held to inform the public about U.S. travel document requirements and encourage Americans to apply for passports and passport cards.

If you apply for a passport Saturday, you can expect to get the document in about four weeks for routine service and two to three weeks for expedited service.

In addition to hundreds of post offices, town offices and other government facilities where passports are accepted, more than a dozen passport agencies in major cities around the country will hold walk-in hours Saturday with no appointment necessary. Locations for these passport agencies include Boston, New York, Chicago, Honolulu, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle, Washington D.C., New Orleans, Norwalk, Conn., Aurora, Colo., and Portsmouth, N.H.

Hours of operation will vary by location. Check http://www.travel.state.gov, where you’ll also find information on fees and how to apply for a passport book or passport card. You can also get information by phone at 877-487-2778.

Beginning on June 1, travelers will be required to present documents proving both citizenship and identity when entering the U.S. by land or sea from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean or Bermuda. If you don’t have a passport, but you expect to return to the U.S. from Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean by cruise or land transportation, a passport card is a cheaper, smaller, more portable alternative to a conventional passport book. Passport cards are not, however, valid for air travel.
